UPGRADE SUGGESTIONS
Here are some
basics to consider when making a decision to upgrade your laptop.
MEMORY
MOST PII AND PIII LAPTOP
SYSTEM HAS MAXIMUM MEMORY CAPACITY BETWEEN 512MB & 1GB. P4 SYSTEMS
WILL TAKE ANYWHERE BETWEEN 1GB TO 2GB OF RAM.
NEWER LAPTOPS WITH MULTIPLE CORE
PROCESSOR IS ABLE TO UTILIZE BETWEEN 2GB & 8GB OF MEMORY. THIS
DEPENDS ON THE CHIPSET AND DESIGN OF LAPTOP.
ALSO, IN ORDER TO USE OVER 3GB
OF RAM, A 64BIT OPERATING SYSTEM IS NEEDED (WINDOWS; XP, VISTA OR
7 64 BIT)
CPU
PLEASE NOTE THAT
WHEN UPGRADING A CPU; THE TYPE, SOCKET/SLOT & SPEED ARE IMPORTANT
TO THE UPGRADE PROCESS. IN SOME CASES LAPTOPS SHIPPED WITH CORE
DUO CPUS CAN BE UPGRADED TO A CORE 2 DUO. IN OLDER SYSTEMS THE
TYPE CPU CANNOT BE CHANGED BUT YOU CAN UPGRADE THE SPEED. ADDITIONALLY, SOME LAPTOPS HAS THE CPU SOLDERED TO THE
MOTHERBOARD AND THEREFORE CANNOT BE REMOVED.
OPTICAL DRIVE
IF YOUR LAPTOP WAS NOT SHIPPED
WITH AN EXTERNAL DRIVE YOU MAY WISH TO PURCHASE A EXTERNAL
PORTABLE SUPER SLIM OPTICAL DRIVE. NEWER LAPTOPS ARE SHIPPED WITH
DVDRW (WRITE/PLAY CDS & DVDS) DUAL LAYER BURNERS AND SOME WITH BLU-RAY
PLAYERS (WRITE CDS/DVDS & PLAY CDS/DVD/BLU-RAY DISC). HOWEVER, A
FEW LOW END UNITS ARE STILL SHIPPED WITH CDRW/DVD COMBO
(WRITE/PLAY CDS & PLAY DVDS) DRIVES.
VIRTUALLY ALL LAPTOPS CAN BE UPGRADED TO A DVD-ROM DRIVE. BUT WHY
STOP THERE, WHY NOT CONSIDER AN INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL LIGHT WEIGHT
DVDRW DRIVE. THIS OPTION IS MOSTLY RECOMMENDED FOR HIGHER PIII
SYSTEMS AND IS AVAILABLE FOR MOST IF NOT ALL P4 SYSTEMS.
HARD
DRIVE
UPGRADING NEWER LAPTOPS WITH
MULTI CORE CPUS OFFERS COMES WITH MANY OPTIONS. BUT FIRST YOU MUST
CHECK THE TYPE DRIVE USED BY YOUR LAPTOP; IDE ATA OR SERIAL ATA (SATA).
SOME DRIVES ARE ALSO SOLD WITH SOLID STATE DRIVES (SSD). THE SSD
IS MUCH LIKE A FLASH CARD AND CARRIES NO MOVABLE COMPONENTS AND
PROMISES GREATER RELIABILITY.
FOR IDE ATA DRIVES MOST UNITS
WILL TAKE UP TO A 250GB. MOST NEWER SYSTEMS WHEN USED WITH A 64
BIT OPERATING SYSTEM WILL TAKE UP TO A 1TB DRIVE.
MOST PIII LAPTOPS CAN BE UPGRADED TO A 40GB HARD DRIVE AND THE
EARLIER P4 SYSTEMS A 60GB OR 80GB. HOWEVER, ON A NEWER SYSTEM A
100GB HARD DRIVE IS AN OPTIONAL UPGRADE.
